I was twelve years old when Tangled came out, and it instantly became one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. I found a new favorite movie, and no other movie has come close to taking that title. The following are a few reasons why I love Tangled and think it Is the best movie ever.
The Lantern Scene
At the time of writing this post, I have seen Tangled more than 25 times. That’s more than three times a year while going to school, working, and trying to keep up with new releases. No matter how many times I see the movie, the “I See the Light” sequence can still make me cry. I feel incredibly moved each time I see it because of all the hard work that went into creating it. There are 45,000 lanterns in the scene* and everything reflects off of the water. The reflection complicates the lighting, which was already going to be crazy because of the number of light sources. The incredible animation combined with the song and the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi make this scene perfect.
The lantern scene is not the only instance in which the animation proved challenging. Rapunzel has 70 feet of hair*. This was a problem animators hadn’t previously dealt with. They had to develop new software to use, and they brought in someone with a PhD in hair to work with them*. Rapunzel has 100,000 strands of hair* that drag across a variety of surfaces and get wet. The movement of hair (and clothing) underwater is challenging to simulate, and the animators and effects teams did an amazing job.
The Detail, Time, and Effort
The previous reasons I mentioned for why I love Tangled mention how much time and skill went into creating the movie, but I wanted to explicitly state it again. Everyone who worked on this movie put so much care into the project and it is apparent in every scene, sequence, and frame. One of my favorite examples of how much attention was paid to every detail is the meeting the directors held about the appearance of Flynn Rider*. The directors asked women from around their office to come in and discuss the character’s features to ensure that the character design was the best that it could be.
Tangled makes me laugh out loud. The shenanigans of Pascal, Maximum, the “thugs,” and Flynn Rider never fail to make me smile. Any movie that can continue to make me chuckle after watching it so many times is a keeper in my book.
